On This Day…
Off to sunny Wimbledon today, so a welcome day off. It is Ladies semi-final day today and at least there is still one of the Williams sisters left in so it will be similar to last year’s day out for the same stage of the tournament. It’s really funny, I’m not a great lover of tennis but Wimbledon just has something. Not sure what it is but I suppose the weather helps and the thought that the major tennis tournament and it being on grass, is on our doorstep just a hour or so’s train ride. Sure I’ll have more to say tomorrow.
Managed to get a few jobs done last night at home although it didn’t look much. Jo has been diligently removing brambles from around the big shed at the bottom, so with my new bow saw I have helped out by removing the larger undergrowth of small hawthorn and elderflower. That should enable her to do some more around, but as she tells me, it’s unlikely to be today as Thursday is cleaning day.
Started my evening by making a new batch of pickled eggs. We had been deliberately stocking up and not giving many away so I managed to boil up twenty, shell them after they had been cooled with cold water and get them into kilner jars immersed in pickling vinegar, so they should be ready in about four weeks. This time I have used the standard vinegar without adding chilli or similar as I have yet to taste the batch with that flavouring added.
Also managed to get some pretty large limbs of Sycamore and Ash trees that were seriously overhanging the grass at the bottom, shading it and stunting growth. I need to do some more yet but at least it was a start. I use a pretty ingenious tool for this which I bought from work. It is a high limb chainsaw which is effectively a 24 inch chain from a chainsaw with a rope on either end about 30 ft in length. It has a weighted bag on one end which you simply lasso over the limb and with a strange little bar which pretty successfully tips the chain up the right way, pull the rope handles back and forth until the limb is cut. Certainly seems a little easier than climbing the tree with a ferocious conventional chainsaw, although you do need to make sure you are not under the limb when it comes down.
On this day in history and last year…
