On This Day…
Bit of a sad day today with the death of Luciano Pavarotti at the age of 71. He probably single-handedly brought opera to the masses with his rendition of Nessun Dorma. In fact it was known as ‘Pavarotti’s Nessum Dorma’!
Got a trip back to Peter Simmons College tonight, the last time I suspect for Lindsay as she collects the College’s Sociology Prize, a great honour.
Look at the coincidence in Hatches, matches, despatches…
England, who had a 3-1 lead over India in the 7 match One-Day International series at cricket have had that reduced to 3-3 in a great game yesterday and that brings it to a fitting conclusion at Lords at the weekend. I, of course will see neither this or the England football match, as I will be either mid-Atlantic or actually in the US
On this day…
- The Mayflower leaves Plymouth with the Pilgrims bound for America (1620)
- Howard Unruh becomes the US’s first single-episode mass murderer (1949)
- Canada’s first TV Station (CBFT-TV) opens (1952)
- Swaziland becomes independent from the UK (1968)
- Diana, Princess of Wales’s funeral takes place (1997)

ooops, now corrected, glad you’re reading so thoroughly
It was the two tennis players having birthdays on the same day (different years). We claim them both (we need the help in tennis), although as you know, Greg is nearer to you guys!
